KINDNESS IS VALUABLE

The Word says LOVE is Kind. How can we be kinder because it is such an essential virtue? I am passionate about kindness. I absolutely despise bad treatment and I am very vocal about it. I hate injustice and I hate seeing others or myself taken for granted. And I will confront the unkindness. Unkindness can knock one’s self esteem. No one, no matter how confident, likes to be treated badly. Some girls are really mean and laugh or comment on others and this upsets me too, not to talk about the person who is being treated badly.

The tips below will help us to think more about being kinder to others.

Look Inwards
There are reasons why we are sometimes unkind to others and maybe it’s because we have things going on inside our world so we want to lash out. If we are frustrated with life in anyway, we shouldn’t take it out on others. We should learn to deal with our own issues. Ada had anger issues. This caused her to be short tempered and tactless when dealing with others. But she soon realised that it was affecting her relationships. She confided in a friend and is now looking for ways to deal with anger.

Childhood Issues
Some people are unkind because of childhood issues. Maybe their parents were unkind to them. Maybe they had a difficult upbringing. This is not a reason to be unkind to others. The best way to deal with matters like abuse is to seek professional counselling. Lisa was molested as a young girl. She kept this a big secret but was angry with the world. She found any opportunity to be unkind to others, especially those that she thought were happy. Fortunately for Lisa, she found a mentor who had been through a similar experience to her and was able to steer her in the right way.

Treat Others Well
There is nobody that I have met that likes to be treated unkindly. The truth is sometimes unkindness can really knock ones self esteem. This happened to Agatha. She was being bullied by a girl called Temi. She was called really unkind names. Temi knew she was getting to her and carried on the abuse. Agatha fell into depression and was almost suicidal. When Temi discovered this, she felt so bad and changed her ways.

It doesnt come naturally for everyone to be reflective, but we should really be mindful when dealing with others. We should also ask the following, is our behaviour nice, pure, kind and does it reflect our beliefs? As a Christian, I always have to ask myself if my behaviour reflects Christ.

Nobody Is Perfect
Kindness needs to be practised and deliberate. Sometimes, affirming to ourselves that we are kind, will help us be kinder. At my valuable YOU Summer Camp for girls, I get the girls to recite a daily Valuable YOU anthem which includes kindness. Nobody is perfect but we should make an effort to try to be kind, always.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT SUMMER CAMP?

When I was growing up in London, my mum always booked me up for summer camp. Summer was never boring for me. I went to overnight camps and also ones run by the local church or school. Since relocating to Lagos, I have also conducted and delivered exciting summer camps in my local neighbourhood. From our camp research, listed below are factors that make a great summer camp.

FUN FACTOR
Any parent that sends their child to summer camp to learn just literacy and numeracy will not have a happy child. C’mon, children have been working hard all year round and the last thing they want to do is school work during summer holidays. The children just want to have fun and lots of it. So look for summer camps that have exciting activities. Your child deserves it.

VARIETY
Variety they say is the spice of life and who really wants to spend summer just doing one activity? Not children. Their minds are alert and they want to learn new and varied topics. So don’t get caught up in sending them to a summer school that caters for one skill only. They will get bored. Trust me.

CREATIVITY
Children love getting creative. Drawing, building, music, beading, dancing, making things or writing things down; They love them all. Look for camps that have a wide range of activities. You don’t want your child coming back from camp with excess energy and saying things like “I’m bored”.

BONDING
One reason I loved summer camp was because it was an opportunity to meet new and interesting people. When I went away for summer camp, I met a friend called Dionne. Even though I haven’t seen her since I was 10, I always have fond memories of our friendship. Things havent changed today. My children love making new friends at summer camp.

ADVENTURE
To keep the children coming back to camp, you should look for camps that offer adventure. Maybe they will solve a mystery case or a treasure hunt or unusual sports activities. Children love adventure.

LIFE SKILLS
Finally look for a summer camp that will deliver important life skills that will make your child stand out and have a competitive edge. These skills may include leadership, public speaking, communication and etiquette. Do your research and ask around for reputable summer camps.

I wish you the very best in your search.

BUILDING CONFIDENT GIRLS THROUGH THEMED EVENTS

Raising Confident Girls is something that I am very passionate about and together with over 4000 members on facebook, we share ideas and suggestions on how to raise confident girls. One of my sister friend’s asked me to do a segment for her daughter’s 10th birthday on Raising Confident Girls and I accepted without hesitation.
Power Words
The fun started with pass the confident ball (instead of pass the parcel). When the music stopped, one girl at a time, pulled a note from the hat and described the confident word. Power words help build confidence. These are just a few power words that you should be using daily in your vocabulary; ‘amazing’, beautiful, delightful, majestic, fabulous, unique, spectacular, extraordinary, wow…'
Confident Spelling Bee Contest
Another way to boost confidence is to practice what you are good at. The more you practice the better you become. I decided to include a confident spelling bee quiz which the girls were very good at. I divided the girls into teams and they picked a word from the hat, spelt it and described the meaning.
Words of Affirmation Builds Confidence
Words of Affirmation are one of the 5 love languages and are excellent for building confidence. I asked the girls to describe the birthday girl and say something that they like about her. They mentioned fun, caring, intelligent, bold, friendly, daring, which to me means her parents are doing a great job in raising a confident girl.
Inner Confidence
During the birthday party, I shared some nuggets on inner confidence and the ability to believe and accept oneself. Inner confidence does not grow from corporate success, accolades, or our ability to speak in public. It’s not nurtured by who “sees” us, or the image we have built up around ourselves. It can only come from accepting yourself completely.

I also spoke to the girls about self love, self knowledge, positive talk and setting clear goals, as these help build self confidence.

The Runway
My session ended on a high with the girls running the catwalk. In role play fashion, the girls just flew in from Italy, LA, Monaco, Cape Town and Paris and came especially for the 10th birthday ( story telling -wink) and oh we mothers got to have fun too because moms just wanna have fun yeah.
The feedback from the family “You did a fantastic job and the girls loved it. It is such a great way to pass on a very important message”.

WHY ARE YOU HERE?

No matter what circumstances in which you were born, you are not an accident. Everybody is here for a purpose and the sooner you discover why you are here, the more fulfilled your life will be. When we look at celebrities like Beyonce, Serena Williams and Tiger Woods, they discovered their ‘why’ very early. So can you. The points below will give some clues as to your WHY.

WHAT GIVES YOU ENERGY?
When you get up in the morning and you feel energised because you are about to do a certain task then you are closer to your “why”. And no, I am not talking about going on holidays. I am talking about ordinarily tasks that give you energy. For me, it’s planning an event and doing a publicity campaign. I just feel alive and I don’t come down from my high energy until the event is successfully over.

That wasn’t always the case. I use to work in a bank for 5 years. It drained me and I didn’t feel fulfilled at all. Once I resigned, I felt a big weight off my shoulders and then I went to the BBC for 8 years doing what I love. And now I work for myself and I love what I do in marketing and communications.

WHAT ARE YOU GOOD AT?
The quickest way to discover what you are good at is to brainstorm. Simply write down all the things you are good at and grade them on a scale of 1-10. I am creative and I enjoy expressing myself on paper. It takes me about 10 minutes or less to write a blog. All the ideas just flow out. Some people find it difficult to get one line on paper. Writing is just not their gift. When you are good at doing something it takes much less time than someone who doesn’t have the gift. You just do it effortlessly.

My 14 year old daughter sings. She sings everywhere around the house. She hasn’t decided yet whether she wants to take it up as a career yet or go into business like her mama. But she will go far if she develops her gift in singing.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR FREE?
There are things that we just love to do and if money was no issue we would do them for free. That will lead you, closer to your why. Many successful people were doing what they do for free before they turned it into a career because it is their passion.

YOU ARE A GIFT TO THE WORLD
Most people don’t realise how valuable they are or their ‘why’. We often take each other for granted until it’s too late. But don’t worry about that just focus on your why and you will get there.

Just remember that you are a gift to the world. Find your purpose and find your ‘why’ and don’t let anyone else stop you.
